Being in a union as a paraprofessional is imperative. We come together to amend working conditions in our schools; we also meet to negotiate our wages and benefits. Without a union, we do not have a voice, but with the union, we come and work together collectively, and that’s when you see the power of Unity at its best!
For instance, when there is unfairness or when we face workplace challenges, we know we are able to get the proper advocacy through our union. When we work through our union, you’ll see a difference in your workplace for the better. There have been several times I did not feel comfortable doing an assignment, but my union never let me down. They were there for me when I had these questions, and they came through and were able to amend these non-contractual assignments. I appreciate being and working with the UFT, my union.
I have been in the same school for over 20 years, but I also felt there were certain things missing, and that’s when I put my all into being a paraprofessional representative. It didn’t stop there; later on, I took on the role of executive board at large. I got the chance to work with so many great unionists—it is inspiring. It makes me want to help and work just as my Unity peers do. I’m grateful for the opportunity it has given me once again, not only to help my school but to try to help others as well. I love being in meetings with our Chair, Priscilla Castro, the steering committee, and other executive board members.
I’ve noticed several challenges were coming up, not only with me but with several members. Thanks to my union, with the proper training and dedication, we’ve been able to improve not only my school but also ensure that paraprofessionals citywide are treated equally and respectfully.
I love my job. I love being able to help and support other members in our union. I love that I get to work with such great people in this caucus who have taught me so much and continue to be an inspiration.
